All of what will be on here is stuff taken from the web for study purposes only. ..................................................................................................................................... Info about Utah Railway and DRGW coal trains
Typically, they would run 84 cars (mostly due to length restrictions on plant tracks). They would usually go with either 3 big units (SD60 or stronger) or 4 little units (SD40 or smaller) all on the head end.
When DPUs came on the scene, it was generally a 2x1 or a 2x2, still with 84 cars. The big difference now is that the cars generally are aluminum 120 ton cars instead of steel 100 ton hoppers.
Occassionally we would run 100 cars, but most of the time it was 84.
There was a train that we used to run the CMJPV (Coal - Mojave to Provo) that was a string of emptys that was about 130 - 140 cars, but it was usually 3 units on the head end. ...........................................................................................................................................
