Bill Gates Talks Xbox 360 " May. 3rd, 2005 6:28 am
Speaking to the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in Seattle, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates revealed that the next-generation Xbox will ship later this year and it will be more of a digital entertainment hub than its predecessor, making it even more of a PC hybrid than ever.
Gates told the journalists gathered at the annual meeting that Xbox 360's user interface will be similar to that of the company's Media Center edition of Windows XP.
"If you're used to that menu, when you use Xenon you'll see a menu a lot like that that lets you get photos, TV, music and all those different things."
Next Generation Console War
Gates also talked about the company’s plans to take on Sony and the Cell-powered PlayStation. When asked if Microsoft would be able to beat Sony and its next generation PlayStation with the Xbox 360, Gates said that top employees involved with the development of the next generation Xbox have promised Steve Ballmer that Xbox 360 would beat Sony.
"Our goal in the last generation was to be in the game," Gates told reporters, "We came out of this round a strong number two."
"What we've got in this (next round), at some significant financial cost, was the right to play again with great credibility," he added. "So now people are looking at the two companies at a pretty much equal basis."
Gates also revealed that Microsoft has spent more than $2 billion to develop and market Xbox, which it expects to become a major source of profit and income.
